Do you remember the moment in the second Star Wars movie, The Empire Strikes Back, when Luke Skywalker dramatically discovers who his father is? With the distinctive sounds of the trumpets and trombones beating the Imperial March as Luke hangs helplessly from a catwalk Darth Vader declares, “Luke, I am your father…search your feelings, you know it to be true.” My very own Darth Vader, dad reveal moment happened on January 11, 2018 at 1:33 pm.
Knowing the letter would arrive sometime on January 11, I hadn’t been expecting a call from Hawaii. Well, if I am being honest, I hadn’t expected a call at all. So the morning of January 11 was like any other normal morning. The only difference about this particular morning was I had meetings with my hubby as opposed to each of us having a slate of separate meetings. We took a tour of a non-profit center and met a friend for lunch. Because I was channeling my desperate need to be present (as opposed to constantly being distracted with a mounting email inbox) I had placed my phone in my purse under the table. We had a leisurely lunch and as I stepped into the car (luckily my hubby was driving) my phone was ringing. It was an (808) area code and the phone said Hawaii. Apparently, I had already missed two calls. I panicked and all at once the memory of the letter I sent, the fact that today was Thursday flooded my mind! Oh crap. What do I say? As my mind is racing my hubby is saying to me…answer it, answer it!
The voice on the other line…”Lisa…this is your father.”
