Adopted children have two birth certificates. I had no idea until my mom mentioned she didn’t know my Dad’s full Hawaiian name and therefore, my birth certificate didn’t list a father. What birth certificate? A pre-adoption birth certificate is provided when a child is born. Of course this makes logical sense but I just assumed my adopted birth certificate was my only certificate. And so it began. Yet another bureaucratic process that became a labyrinth of paperwork, phone calls and persuasion in order to obtain my original birth certificate. Once received I realized both my biological and my adopted mother gave me the same middle name. Coincidence?
