As I laid in bed tonight listening to the pouring rain on our roof, to my husband’s rhythmic breathing and to the dog at the foot of our bed humming in content satisfaction, I have an idea. I need to write. My Hawaiian people are storytellers and I have to share this beautiful, moving and powerful story. But even more importantly, people who don’t live on the mainland need to understand the deep, rich Hawaiian culture.
Many years ago I heard the journalist who co-wrote the “Last Lecture” with Randy Pausch speak. Jeffrey Zaslow’s described the year they spent talking after Randy‘s terminal diagnosis. He spoke about daily conversations that Zaslow recorded. This is what I wanted to do with my Dad. But, how could I practically and realistically meet with him every day, recording our conversations over the phone?
