Father’s Day has always been a date on the calendar I dread. A day when I am reminded I did not grow up in a picturesque home with a loving father. In fact, my experience was quite the opposite. My adopted father wasn’t a good person, he was abusive. As I have mentioned in my previous posts, he was a predator not a protector.
This year is different. This year I have a Dad to celebrate on Father’s Day. This year the date on the calendar elicited excitement rather than dread.
I posted on social media that in January, I had met my biological father. This was the first, very public link I had made between my Hawaiian hertiage and journey to my Dad. I shared that he is an amazing man, a natural bornleader. I shared that he, and his entire family, have welcomed me with open arms and open hearts. I shared that while we have missed over four decades to get to know one another he isn’t losing any time and that he was so worth the wait!
